The Enigmatic Quaco Cobbles, Upper Triassic, Canadian Maritimes: Deformation by Tectonics or Seismic Shock?

چکیده

The most distinctive feature of the Upper Triassic (Carnian) Quaco Formation, coastal New Brunswick, Canada, is the pervasive occurrence of cm-scale circular to elliptical markings and indentations on the cobble surfaces. Also present on many of the cobbles are fractures that radiate from these indentations and spalled clast margins. The smooth-surfaced depressions that occur on most cobbles likely originated through pressure solution, potentially enhanced by a stage of tectonic compression during basin inversion. However, the radial fracturing of the clasts, grain fracturing within the clast fabric, and clast spalling could be explained as the result of concussion fracturing at points of clast contact during the passage of strong shock waves, such as those resulting from the Manicouagan impact. The open nature of some of the fractures and micro-faulting of the cobbles suggest that compressive tectonics enhanced previously formed fractures. At this time it is not possible to determine the origin of the fractures conclusively. Thus, the competing hypotheses of tectonics and seismic shock remain viable.

Triassic-jurassic Boundary on the Southern Margin of Tethys: Implications of Facies, Tectonics and Volcanism

The facies changes, tectonics and magmatism across the Triassic–Jurassic boundary in the southern Tethyan margin have been studied in Egypt, Sudan, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia and Jordan an unconformable contact is recognized between the Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic rocks. This unconformity surface is marked by the truncation of the fluvial clastics of the uppermost Triassic b...

Aigion EQ (Greece) derived from InSAR data and implications for extensional tectonics of the western Corinth rift

On June 15 th , 1995, a M w = 6.3 earthquake struck the western part of the Gulf of Corinth with mainshock epicentre 16 km NNE from Aigion city. The present study presents the application of SAR interferometry (InSAR) techniques for obtaining the co-seismic deformation pattern and inferring the fault model parameters for this seismic event. A second objective is test the Rigo et al., (1996) mod...

Evidence of fluid - filled upper crust from observations of post - seismic deformation due to the 1992 M w 7 . 3 Landers earthquake

I investigate post-seismic deformation due to the 1992 Mw7.3 Landers, southern California, earthquake using the entire catalog of the ERS Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, and GPS measurements made between 1992 and 1999. The stacked interferometric SAR data spanning the time period of seven years between the Landers and the Hector Mine earthquakes reveal a transient post-seismic deformation ...

Geomorphic and structural assessment of active tectonics in NW Alborz

Alborz Mountains is a region of active deformation within Arabia-Eurasia collision zone. The study fault system in western Alborz comprises abundant evidence of active faulting accompanied by occurrence of historical earthquakes. Active tectonics of Manjil-Rudbar fault zone whose movement caused destructive 1990 Manjil-Rudbar earthquake was concentrated in this article through geomorphic and st...
